WELCOME
TO MADINAT UR-RIJOL!
Termez
- is one of the historical cities of Uzbekistan, located in the south, in the
hottest part of the country.
Historical information of
Arabs and Greeks, as well as archaeological finds indicate that Termez is one
of the ancient cities of Uzbekistan and Central Asia. The convenient
geographical and strategic location of the city at the intersection of trade
routes between the west and east, south and north provided the basis for its
successful development.
The Great Silk Road passed through Termez.
Termez played a significant
role in the development of the ancient civilization of the East. According to
the archaeological excavations of the fortress of ancient Termez and analyzes
of manuscripts, the city began its existence in the middle of the first
millennium. Termez developed cultural and trade relations with such states as
Sogdiana, Khorezm, Margiana and Parthia. Archaeological finds indicate that Termez
was actively involved in the development of cultural and trade relations.
In the IV-III centuries BC,
the ancient fortress of Termez was a populated area. At one time, Hofzi Abrui
wrote that the name of the city came from the Bactrian word «Taramast», which
means «settlement on the other bank.» In different centuries, the city received
various names, such as Anthony, Demetrias, Tarmid, Tarmiz, Tami, Tamo and
others. From the 10th century, the city became known as Termez.
In the III-II centuries. BC.
Termez has become one of the most developed, cultural, political and commercial
regions of Bactria. All archaeological finds indicate that commodity relations
and money appeared in a given area earlier than anywhere else in Maveronahre.
Termez successfully flourished
during the reign of Kushan. At that time, Termez expanded and became a major
city in Northern Bactria. At the same time, it was the center of the Buddhism
of the Kushan state.
In X-XIIv. Termez flourished,
being the center of trade and craft of Tokharistan. Its territory occupied more
than 500 hectares. At that time, grand buildings were built in the city.
Alternately,
Termez was in the following states: Ghaznavids, Karakhanids, Karakitians,
Seljukids, and the state of Khorezm. The city was destroyed in 1220 by the
Mongols. According to Sharafuddin Ali Yazdi’s Zafarnam records, city residents
offered strong resistance to the Mongols, which is why the city was nicknamed
“Madinat Ur-Ryzhol” (which means “city of the brave”).
